James and I are so blessed, not only by knowing Christ but also by being Americans. This weekend we were talking with our dear friend Sheila on the way to the American WWII Cemetery in Luxembourg. She was explaining that when she was little, everyone would visit the cemeteries and pay homage to fallen soldiers on Memorial Weekend. All of the rest of us had never done this as a child but rather spent the weekend at a BBQ or camping. It is interesting how things can change over time. Of course, BBQ's, camping, and time with friends and family is an amazing way to enjoy the freedoms that America has given us but it was really special to spend a few hours remembering those who have given their life for our country. We visited the WWII cemetery and memorial not knowing what to expect. The grounds are kept so beautifully and each of the 5,000+ soldiers buried there had their own stone; decorated with an American and Luxembourger flag. The ceremony was a full-on military fete with a 21-gun salute, an A-10 fly-over, and beautiful words from Americans and Luxembourgers alike. There were several things that hit me but mostly was the wonderful and apparent appreciation that Luxembourg had towards the U.S. as well as the valiant sacrifice that these soldiers had made. Being that close to where it all happened and standing upon the grounds where these brave souls rested was so enlightening. It was another reminder of Gods grace towards Americans, Europeans, and the entire human race. These soldiers laid down their lives for what they believed in, an ultimate example of Christ-likeness.
"This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters." 1 John 3:16
How awesome! I think it is meat that they visit the cemetery to remember what Memorial Day is really about. I have never heard of that before. Love the pictures, they are beautiful!
