Back Eurotrip Chapter 1: Burg Eltz

And the journey begins...

Mom and Dad Back visited us for 3 weeks and we had a fun-filled, packed time traveling all over Europe. This was their first time in Europe and we wanted to give them a taste of everything. We began our travels by doing a 10km hike up to Burg Eltz. We took a boat ride down the Mosel to Treis-Karen where we began our trek.

There is just something special about looking down into the Mosel valley from the top of a hill. The old structures butting up against the river with modern roads winding in between. There was no one else on the trail and the sun was shining. We went through every type of greenery. Starting out near the vineyards, then through the hilly forest, to the top with a plane of grass and windmills, and finally down into the heavily wooded area where the castle sits.

Even though the hike was long and strenuous, the end result was amazing. A unique castle built into the valley, protected on all sides by trees and hills. Its like a precious gem, nestled in the trees waiting to be discovered.

It was fun to show the family the typical Mosel-valley-castle-situaion as well as enjoy a lovely hike. We couldn't have asked for better weather or company. And we even ended the night at the Cochem Wine Festival. (All photos taken with Panasonic)
