Back Eurotrip Chapter 2: Crazy Ludwig

Chapter two of our journey began with us packing into the BMW and driving down to Bavaria. This part of Germany is the typical, lederhosen-wearing, stein-drinking, castle part of the country that most people associate with German culture. We spent 2 days enjoying the extraordinary sights and natural beauty of the German Alps.

We visited all of crazy Ludwig's castles including the Hohenschwangau, Neuschwanstein, and Linderhof palace. Each has its own unique beauty and story. The Hohenscwangau is where Ludwig spent part of his childhood. It is situated on the beautiful Schwan Lake and is a spectacular yellow sight in a forest of green.

The Neuschwanstein is the most well-known of crazy Ludwig's castles. It is a monstrosity of white standing out on a hill. It is also the design Disney used for his famous castle. I made the death-defying walk across Mary's Bridge (yeah, the wood planks were rotting and I had visions of falling to my death) for a photo with the hubby.

We also had a lovely walk up to the castle area with amazing views of the valley.

This was also the dreaded day where our camera incident happened, but it was all worth it after this view.

Our final day in Bavaria was the typical down-pour-tropical-storm-in-Germany-day at Ludwig's Linderhof palace. This was my most favorite visit because it was where he spent most of his time. It is situated in the middle of the hills and secluded from all else. A "cabin in the woods" except that it was a palace...

Now you can understand why they called him crazy considering he built a cave to play the organ for himself and never invited anyone else there...

This part of our journey was so refreshing. Being out in the beautiful Bavarian hills and mountains was a great way to enjoy Germany at its best. But we were ready for some fun in the sun...

  1. Beautiful pictures!! Ludwig's palace sounds a little bit like Phantom of the Opera... an organ in an underground cave?? Crazy!
